Ludix

Hot potato game

A topic is drawn and the fuse is lit: whoever holds the phone says a word from the topic and passes it on. Nobody knows when it will blow, and whoever is holding it then loses a point.

How it works

  1. Open Ludix and choose Hot potato in the games on the home screen, then enter the players in circle order.
  2. Tap Light the fuse: a topic appears; say a matching word, tap the screen and pass the phone.
  3. The ticking speeds up, then BOOM: whoever holds the potato loses a point and starts the next round.

What you can do

  • A fuse of hidden length, drawn at random between two limits you set (15 to 45 seconds by default).
  • A topic every round if you want one, out of about forty: country, animal, job, video game, excuse for being late…
  • Up to 12 players on a single phone, with a tally of points lost: the least burned wins.
  • With no player list, just play for fun without keeping score.
  • In a multiplayer game, the potato goes from phone to phone: you choose who gets it, except the person who just gave it to you.
  • Sound, vibration and animation when it blows; the screen stays on during the game.

Great for

  • Nights with friends, to warm things up in a few minutes.
  • Kids’ birthday parties, sitting in a circle.
  • A vocabulary game in class or at home, with a topic every round.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell when the potato will blow?

No: the length is drawn at random between the two limits and is never shown. Only the ticking, which speeds up in steps, warns you that the blast is getting close.

How do you play with everyone on their own phone?

Create a multiplayer game: players scan the QR code, then the host picks Hot potato. The potato lands on one phone and its holder chooses who to pass it to. When it blows, the holder is burned and everyone else scores a point.

What if a player has no phone?

In a multiplayer game, the host passes the potato for them. On a single phone, just hand it around.

Do I need to install an app or create an account?

No, everything runs in the browser, with no account. Players in a multiplayer game join with the QR code, nothing to install.
